Free Random Team Generator — Split Groups Instantly

Our random team picker makes it effortless to divide any group of people into fair, balanced teams in seconds. Add names, choose how many teams you want, click Generate, and done. No arguments, no bias, just instant random groups.

The tool shuffles all names randomly using a Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm and distributes them as evenly as possible across your chosen number of teams. If the numbers do not divide evenly, the extra players are spread across the first teams so every team is as balanced as possible.

How to use the random team generator

Add names one at a time using the input field, or click Load Sample to try the tool with a pre-loaded list. Set the number of teams you need using the number input, then click Generate Teams. The names are shuffled randomly and split into your chosen number of groups. Hit Regenerate as many times as you like to get a different random split — each regeneration is completely independent.

Once you have a split you are happy with, click Copy Results to copy all teams to your clipboard in a clean text format that you can paste into a message, spreadsheet, or document.

Why use a random team generator?

Manual team selection is awkward. Whether it is teachers picking classroom groups, coaches splitting players for practice, or managers forming workshop teams — when humans pick teams, bias creeps in. People pick their friends, experienced players get clustered together, and quieter participants get left until last. A random team generator eliminates all of that by making the split completely impartial.

It is also faster. What might take five minutes of negotiation and reshuffling takes under five seconds with the team generator.

Team generator for sports and PE

Sports coaches and PE teachers use the random team generator to split players into fair practice teams. Because the split is random every time, stronger and weaker players are distributed across teams naturally over multiple sessions, creating balanced competitive games without the coach having to manually balance skill levels.

Team generator for classrooms and schools

Teachers use the team generator to create project groups, discussion pairs, lab partners, and activity teams. Random grouping exposes students to classmates they might not normally work with, which builds social skills and collaborative experience. It also removes the social pressure of students feeling picked last or always working with the same friends.

Frequently asked questions

What if my group doesn't divide evenly into teams?

The tool handles uneven divisions automatically. If you have 11 people and want 3 teams, you will get two teams of 4 and one team of 3. The extra players are distributed across teams as evenly as possible.
