Free Classroom Spinner — Random Student Picker for Teachers

Our classroom spinner is designed specifically for teachers who need a fair, engaging, and completely unbiased way to call on students. Add your class list, spin the wheel, and the classroom spinner randomly selects a student — no favourites, no patterns, completely random every single time.

Students genuinely enjoy the spin animation — it turns a routine classroom moment into something a little exciting. And teachers love elimination mode, which automatically tracks who has and has not been picked yet so no student gets called on twice before everyone has had a turn.

How to use the classroom spinner

Type student names one at a time using the input field, or click Bulk Paste and paste your entire class list at once with one name per line. This makes it easy to import a full class register in seconds without typing every name individually.

Once your class is loaded, click Pick a Student to spin the wheel. Use Normal mode to keep all students available on every spin, or switch to Elimination mode to automatically remove each student from the wheel after they have been picked. The participation counter at the bottom tracks exactly how many students have been picked and how many are still remaining.

Click Reset at any time to restore all students to the wheel and start the participation cycle again.

Why teachers love the classroom spinner

Every teacher knows the challenge of calling on students fairly. It is easy to unconsciously rely on the same engaged students, overlook quieter ones, or feel awkward about who to pick next. The classroom spinner removes all of that by making the selection completely transparent and random.

When students know that any one of them could be picked at any moment, engagement levels increase. Students pay closer attention because they know they need to be ready. The spin animation also adds a small element of fun to what might otherwise be a routine question-and-answer session.

Teachers who use the classroom spinner regularly report that it reduces the social dynamics around participation — students are less self-conscious about being called on when it is clearly random rather than the teacher choosing them specifically.

Elimination mode — ensuring full participation

Elimination mode is the most popular feature for classroom use. When enabled, each student is removed from the wheel the moment they are picked. The wheel then only spins from the remaining students who have not yet been called on. This guarantees that every student participates at least once before anyone is repeated.

The participation counter shows exactly how many students have been picked, how many are remaining, and the total class size — so you always know where you are in the cycle. When all students have been picked, simply click Reset to start the next round.

Classroom spinner vs random name picker

Both tools pick random names, but the classroom spinner has extra features built specifically for teachers. It includes a participation counter, elimination mode with visual tracking of picked students, and a bulk paste feature optimised for class lists. The random name picker is better for general use like giveaways and events, while the classroom spinner is purpose-built for the classroom environment.
